Schleswig-Holstein has 10 statutory public holidays: the nine nationwide ones and, since 2018, Reformation Day. The state parliament in Kiel passed it in February 2018, the first of the four northern states to do so, after a debate in which a secular holiday was also considered. The legal basis is section 2 of the act on Sundays and public holidays. In 2027 Reformation Day falls on a Sunday, so only 5 holidays land on weekdays and 256 working days remain, as many as in Bremen, Hamburg or Lower Saxony. The only true bridge day in 2027 is the Friday after Ascension Day. The weeks around Easter and after Whitsun do better. In 2028, Reformation Day on a Tuesday brings a true bridge day on Monday 30 October, and 3 October on a Tuesday another on 2 October. Ten leave days can buy 32 days off in 2028.

First in the north
Schleswig-Holstein's act on Sundays and public holidays is short. Besides the holidays it protects quiet days such as Good Friday, the national day of mourning and the Sunday of the Dead, on which public events are restricted.
