Hamburg has 10 statutory public holidays: the nine nationwide ones and, since 2018, Reformation Day on 31 October. The city parliament passed it in February 2018, when the northern states were looking for a shared extra holiday; Schleswig-Holstein, Lower Saxony and Bremen chose the same day. The four northern states thus share one calendar, which helps given how closely Hamburg's labour market is tied to its surroundings. In 2027 Reformation Day falls on a Sunday and gives no day off; only 5 holidays land on weekdays and 256 working days remain. 2028 is kinder: Reformation Day is a Tuesday, so is 3 October, and both Christmas holidays fall on Monday and Tuesday. Take the Mondays before 3 October and Reformation Day off in 2028 and each single leave day becomes four days off.

The north agrees on Reformation Day
Until 2017 Hamburg, Bremen, Lower Saxony and Schleswig-Holstein had only the nine nationwide holidays, well behind the south. After the Reformation anniversary the four states looked for a shared extra day. Constitution Day on 23 May and Women's Day were also discussed; since 2018 the Hamburg holiday act names Reformation Day.
For leave planning in 2027 Hamburg therefore relies on the spring: Easter, Ascension Day and Whitsun. A look at the calendar 2027 shows that no holiday falls on a weekday between Whit Monday and Christmas Day.
