Saarland has 12 statutory public holidays and is the only state where Assumption Day on 15 August is a day off everywhere. Section 2 of its holiday act adds Corpus Christi, Assumption Day and All Saints' Day to the nine nationwide days. The state's Catholic character is still the strongest of all sixteen. In 2027, though, Assumption Day falls on a Sunday, so only 7 holidays land on weekdays, leaving 254 working days. In 2028, 15 August falls on a Tuesday and the Monday before becomes an extra bridge day. Ten leave days can buy 32 days off in 2028. Cross-border commuters to France and Luxembourg follow those countries' holidays at work; 15 August is a holiday in Lorraine and in Luxembourg too.

The most Catholic holiday act
The Saarland holiday act is the only one that names Assumption Day without restriction. Saarland still has the highest share of Catholics of any state. With Corpus Christi and All Saints' Day it has three more holidays than the northern states.
