On paper Brandenburg counts 12 public holidays, level with Baden-Württemberg. The reason is a quirk of section 2 of its holiday act: Brandenburg is the only state that also lists Easter Sunday and Whit Sunday as statutory holidays. As both always fall on a Sunday they give no day off, but they matter for Sunday and holiday pay supplements, for example in hospitals, care or transport. Reformation Day on 31 October, kept in Brandenburg since 1991, is added too. Leave the Sundays aside and you have the nine nationwide days plus Reformation Day. In 2027 only 5 holidays fall on a weekday, because Reformation Day, 1 May, 3 October and Christmas are on the weekend; that leaves 256 working days, more than almost any other state.

Two Sundays in the act
The Brandenburg holiday act is the only one that puts Easter Sunday and Whit Sunday alongside the other holidays. For the calendar this changes nothing; for working-time rules and pay supplements it can, because some collective agreements pay more for holiday work than for Sunday work. For bridge planning we leave both days aside, since they fall within the weekend anyway.
Many people commute between Berlin and Brandenburg every day. Because the workplace counts, it is worth checking both calendars when you change jobs: Brandenburg has Reformation Day, Berlin has Women's Day. In 2028 Reformation Day falls on a Tuesday, making the Monday before a true bridge day.
