Lower Saxony has 10 statutory public holidays: the nine nationwide ones and, since 2018, Reformation Day on 31 October. The state parliament passed it in June 2018 by a large majority after a lively debate in which other days were proposed too. Section 2 of the Lower Saxony holiday act lists the state-recognised holidays; the act also knows church holidays such as Corpus Christi and All Saints' Day, which are protected in Catholic municipalities but bring no day off. In 2027 Reformation Day falls on a Sunday, so only 5 holidays land on weekdays and 256 working days remain. The only true bridge day in 2027 is the Friday after Ascension Day. 2028 changes the picture: 3 October and Reformation Day fall on Tuesdays, and both Christmas holidays on Monday and Tuesday.

State-recognised and church holidays
The Lower Saxony holiday act draws a careful line: state-recognised holidays are days of general rest from work. Church holidays are protected only during service times; in municipalities where Reformation Day, Corpus Christi or All Saints' Day have always been kept all day, the protection lasts all day. Employees get church holidays off only if their collective agreement or contract says so.
For bridge planning only the ten state-recognised days count. If you work for an employer with a Catholic tradition in the Emsland or the Eichsfeld, check your contract; the calculator covers statutory holidays only.
