Bavaria has the most public holidays in Germany, but not the same number everywhere. Statewide, Art. 1 of the holiday act sets twelve days: the nine nationwide ones plus Epiphany, Corpus Christi and All Saints' Day. Assumption Day on 15 August is a holiday only in municipalities with a predominantly Catholic population; according to the State Office for Statistics that is 1,708 of 2,056 municipalities, including Munich, Regensburg and Würzburg but not Nuremberg, Fürth or Erlangen. The city of Augsburg also has the Peace Festival on 8 August and so 14 holidays, more than anywhere else in Germany. In 2027 Assumption Day and the Peace Festival both fall on a Sunday, in 2028 both on a Tuesday. In a municipality with Assumption Day, 8 of 13 holidays fall on a weekday in 2027, leaving 253 working days.

Assumption Day and the Peace Festival
Bavaria is the only state where a public holiday depends on the denomination of the municipality. Its holiday act relies on a determination by the State Office for Statistics, renewed after each census. Since 15 August 2025 the list based on the 2022 census applies: 1,708 municipalities keep the holiday, 348 do not. Almost all municipalities without it are in Middle and Upper Franconia. Set the holiday under "Your municipality" in the calculator above. Someone living in Nuremberg and working in Fürth works on 15 August; someone living in Nuremberg and working in Munich has the day off. What counts is where the workplace is, not where you live.
