Berlin has 10 statutory public holidays in 2027: the nine nationwide ones plus International Women's Day on 8 March. Berlin introduced it in 2019, the first state to do so; in 2027 it falls on a Monday and makes a long weekend from 6 to 8 March. Berlin's act has no church holidays such as Corpus Christi, All Saints' Day or Reformation Day, so Berlin is among the states with the fewest days off. In 2027 only 6 holidays fall on a weekday, leaving 255 working days, more than in most states. 2028 adds a one-off holiday: on 17 June 2028 Berlin marks the uprising of 17 June 1953, whose 75th anniversary the act expressly makes a public holiday. It falls on a Saturday, though. If you live in Berlin and work in Brandenburg, the holidays of your workplace apply.

Few holidays, but a distinctive one
The Berlin holiday act is short: nine nationwide days, Women's Day and, for 2028, 17 June. Before 2019 Berlin trailed all other states with nine holidays; Women's Day was introduced partly to close that gap. Berlin has passed one-off holidays before, for the 75th anniversary of the end of the war on 8 May 2020 and for the 80th on 8 May 2025.
For leave planning in 2027 that means Easter, Ascension Day and Whitsun carry almost everything. Women's Day on a Monday is a bonus: four leave days from 9 to 12 March turn it into nine days off.
